What changes do you find in the army at this time?

The changes which we find in the army were:
 The kings began to maintain well-organised armies. The armies included foot soldiers, elephants, chariots and cavalry.
 Besides a regular army, the kings appointed some military chiefs who provided troops when needed. They were not given regular salaries, but were paid through land grants. These military chiefs were known as samantas.

The new administrative arrangements during this period were:
• A few important administrative posts were now hereditary means that sons succeeded fathers to these posts.
• Often, one person held many offices. For instance, besides being a maha-danda-nayaka, Harishena was a kumar-amatya, meaning an important minister, and a sandhi-vigrahika, meaning a minister of war and peace.
• Some important individuals had a lot of influence in local administration. For example, the nagara shreshthi (chief merchant or chief banker) was very powerful in any city or town.
• In south India, the local assemblies like the ur or sabha in the village were made responsible for administration of the villages.
