Mrs. Shaw hoped to make a good impression, and she was nervous about how Mary might behave during the visit.
Although Mrs. Shaw suggested Mary go out for a walk, Mary insisted on staying. She was confident that she could speak politely and promised to follow her motherâs advice. Mrs. Shaw reminded her to speak kindly, make people feel welcome, and to say things that would make others happy.
